Title Development Process

The editorial process consists of three main stages: acquisition, development, and production. Acquisition involves the developmet of book ideas, recruiting authors, and developing the book content. As first level AEs do not work with DEs, they do all the acquisition work on all chapters until the handed them over for technical editing and other production work.
Second level and more senior AEs work with DEs. In this case, the AE does most but not all of the work involved in the acquisition process, as the rest is done by the DE. When the AE has accepted the first 3-4 first drafts of the book and made sure that the author is delivering content that meets the agreed book specification and Packt quality standards, they hand over the title to the DE. This is a summary of the DEing tasks:
• The DE reviews every first draft the author submits and gives them feedback. If the quality is not acceptable, the DE sends the chapter back to the author for rewrite.
• The DE recruits technical reviewers to review the content of the book.
• Chapter drafts that are accepted by the DE are sent to at least one external reviewer for expert feedback.
• When the technical reviews of a chapter are received, the DE checks them, incorporates his/her own comments, and sends the chapter back to the Author to act on the comments and finalize the chapter.
• When the final draft of the chapter is received, the DE checks it to make sure that it addressed all comments. If not, it is sent back to the Author.
• When the first one or two final drafts are accepted, the book enters production to prepare it for publication. The book is first edited by Technical Editors, then copy edited, indexed, laid out, proofread, and finally printed and published.
• During the production process, and in particular the TEing stage, the DE might be needed to answer some queries by the TE.
• A Project Coordinator (PC) works with the DE, author, and reviewers to manage the timeline of the book to ensure that deadlines are met.
• The DE writes the Title Information Sheet (TIS) of every book they work on. The TIS is the source of marketing information for the book.
